Strange side effects August 18, 2010 Laura Newton (Oregon) I'm giving this product a neutral review, but just wanted to say I had some strange side effects and stopped taking it. If you start having some unusual symptoms after you start taking Vitex, take a look at what the side effects are.
Game-changer. July 16, 2010 R. Arenstein This regulated my cycles, and did everything it says it will. I will definitely purchase this again and again.
Helped regulate me in DAYS!!! June 1, 2010 H V Del (Miami, FL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have had irregular cycles basically since my first period. Acne, horrible cramps, ovarian cysts and even vomiting added to the irregularity of my cycles caused my gyno to place me on BC when I was 17. I attempted to get off of the pill several times because of negative side-effects (veins, melasma, etc.), but I would skip for up to 5 months (once I even had to be given pills to help bring my period). (Sorry for the long intro, but I wanted to make sure you all knew how this worked for my specific case) After being married, my husband didn't want me taking the pill any longer for fear of long-term effects (after 10 years of taking it) and I got off the pill. My first period didn't come (and I wasn't pregnant) and after 2 months, and not being able to chart my cycle with any of the cycle signs, I decided to research and found out about Vitex. I researched a bit and thought I'd give it a try.
I started taking Vitex on a Wednesday (after 2 months of no period) and on the following Tuesday I got my period. I continued to take it (I am very forgetful, so sometimes I'd only take 1 a day instead of the 2 that it says to take for the first 90 days), but my second cycle was exactly 21 days, and this last one was 33 days. From what I can see right now it has also helped with my cramps, and I have not had any cysts. I am still a little bit irregular, but not going past 3 months without a period is a record for me, so this is an enormous improvement. My husband and I are now doing natural family planning (we use [...] which has GREAT tools) and on the Vitex I am able to chart my cycle PERFECTLY even though they are not exactly regular. I cannot tell you how relieved we both are that I am off of the "Pill" and to be taking something natural. I only wish I could have known about this when I was 17.
Overwhelming depression as a side effect. Please be careful. May 27, 2010 Rachel 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I took Vitex for a period of 3 months to regulate my menstrual cycle. After the first month of taking it I developed depression and anxiety which worsened throughout the next few months. I was bewildered because no amount of positive thinking, healthy eating, or relaxation could shake it. It finally occurred to me that the Vitex could possibly be contributing to this (I am on no other herbs or medications). By the end of the third month, I had developed suicidal feelings and mental confusion that were completely overwhelming. I truly believe that this herb is very potent and my body had a negative reaction to it. I have since completely stopped using it.
I echo the previous reviewer. If you're considering this herb, PLEASE use caution, especially if you have any history of depression, anxiety, or the like. I understand that many women have benefited from the use of this herb and I am glad for those women. However, I would like to speak about my experience in order to perhaps prevent at least one more person from experiencing hell from it.
This herb may cause suicidal tendencies or severe depression May 3, 2010 Evie Anderson (Boise, ID) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
After a few days of taking this I seriously considered suicide. After reading about this product more, I realized this was not just me, it was the herb.
You should not take this herb if you are on the pill. You should not take this herb if you have endometriosis. It may make your symptoms much much worse as it did to me. DO NOT take this if you have ever had side effects from the pill, they may intensify. This can be a very dangerous herb which may cause severe depression and/or suicide.
There are vitamins which can help safely (and more effectively) listed here: Magnesium citrate 600 mg, B6 (in a complex of 25-50 per B vitamin) and Zn (40 mg/day). Take these for 6-12 weeks instead. Please.
Please be very very careful if you buy this and watch your moods carefully.
