Instructions for Upper Arm Blood Pressure Monitors
There are several easy steps to taking your blood pressure with this blood pressure monitor. First of all, avoid eating, smoking, and exercising for at least 30 minutes before taking a measurement. Remove tight-fitting clothing from your upper arm, and sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Slide your left arm through the cuff and position the cuff approximately 0.5-inches above the elbow. On the cuff you'll notice a green marker; position this marker directly over the artery on the inside of your arm. Next, secure the cuff with the Velcro material. The cuff should make direct contact with your skin, but you should be able to easily fit your index finger between the cuff and your arm.

Place your arm on a table so that the cuff is positioned at the same level as your heart. Rest comfortably in a relaxed environment for at least 15 minutes prior to taking your blood pressure measurement. Once you feel relaxed, simply press the start button and remain still. The cuff will begin to inflate and numbers will appear on the display as the heart symbol flashes. When the measurement is complete, the cuff will deflate, and your blood pressure and pulse rate will display on the screen. If you need to stop the measurement at any time, simply press the on/off button and the monitor will immediately deflate. And remember, always consult your physician for specific information about your blood pressure.

What is IntelliSense?
The IntelliSense monitor inflates the cuff to the ideal level with each use -- you never have to make any adjustments to select an inflation level. This is especially convenient for hypertensive users and for people with certain arrhythmia or heart disorders because their blood pressure is so likely to fluctuate. The biggest advantage of using the IntelliSense technology is a personalized inflation, every time, for maximum comfort.

The Importance of Home Blood Pressure Monitoring
Doctors, diabetes educators, physician assistants, nurses, and other healthcare professionals all recommend home blood pressure monitoring for various reasons. Home monitoring provides your healthcare professionals with better information to understand and manage your high blood pressure. Many types of hypertension can only be detected by monitoring your blood pressure at home, including:

  • White-coat Hypertension: blood pressure reading is high in your doctor's office but lower at home
  • Masked Hypertension: blood pressure reading is low in doctor's office but higher at home
  • Morning Hypertension: blood pressure reading is higher in the morning
Additionally, many factors can affect your blood pressure, including physical exertion, emotional fluctuations, medications, and stress. So having your blood pressure monitored at a pharmacy with an in-store device after you've been shopping or walking around might not provide you with the most accurate measurement. Monitoring your blood pressure at home allows you achieve a relaxed state more easily, and it gives you the flexibility to take your measurements at various times during the day. By keeping track of your home blood pressure readings, you can provide your healthcare professional with a log of your measurements over time. This can help them evaluate the effectiveness or need for medication.

4 out of 5 stars Health Managment Software   July 26, 2010
Lou
Machine works well but had a few issues with the software not recognizing the machine and having to be reinstalled. Overall very good.

5 out of 5 stars This was product was recommended by my cardiologist   July 26, 2010
dalmatianmom
I was recently diagnosed with Dilated Cardiomyopathy and had to begin taking my blood pressure in earnest. I was using a wrist model by the same company, but my doctor recommended I use a regular cuff monitor from this company for a more accurate reading. It's very easy to use. I chose the setting where the monitor takes 3 readings each time and gives an average of them. I've read unfavorable reviews about the software that allows you to make a printout graph of your readings, but I haven't had time to install or us this feature. My only concern is that the cover that hides the batteries keeps coming off unexpectedly. I think the price of the unit is a little high too, but I needed to have a good, accurate machine.

5 out of 5 stars This is NOT your father's OMRON B.P. monitor...   July 22, 2010
Michael Way (Shady Side, MD USA)
Okay, I was done with Omron, I've owned two from as far back 12 and 7 years respectively. They were erratic, uncertain and downright dangerous. After having my last annual physical I complained that my pressure may be high and asked to doctor to calibrate and check my Omron with his wall mounted professional sphygmomanometer. After taking readings twice with my old Omron and twice with his equipment, he told me to toss my unit(s) in the trash.

Then coincidentally, I read a review of a lower model number, yet still a newer Omron in Consumer Reports. It was rated the best in class and the list of new features dazzled me. So I surfed over to amazon and saw that there was not only several upgraded models, but an "IT" version of the 790. It intrigued me because in the old days I would have to manually enter my readings into a spreadsheet or some other BP recording software. With the 'IT' USB connection to transfer and store your readings, those days are gone!

This unit is fantastic!

First; there's the cuff. Once you get the hang of where to place the blue line every reading is perfectly dead-on every time. The cuff is snug enough for smaller biceps and generous enough in circumference for beefier arms. After a few readings, the unit seems to remember the range of your systolic and will always pump up a few units higher to insure a good reading. The release of pressure is smooth with the flashing heartbeat letting you know it's working properly.

Second; there's a feature called TruRead which takes three readings in a row, then gives you its computed average. My doc says this is the best way to get an accurate reading.

Third; there is an A & B button for keeping track of two individual's BP history. This feature is top rate and will save a great deal of confusion if you actually have an elevated BP as you can use the `A' for yourself and the `B' for another member to track their readings without polluting your stored history.

Fourth; the software! I've read of others having problems; I haven't, but everyone has their own story to tell about software. Additionally with so many variables in OS nowadays, it is hard to pin down specific problems on the software if you're running on older Win98 or the disastrously imperfect Windows Vista. I am running it on an XP laptop and a Win7 desktop and both work flawlessly.

PROS: Comfortable cuff, accurate readings, intuitive operation, smart design with a beautiful slant-toward-user base.

CONS: Not about the unit itself; it's the bag. My older, terrible units came with a hardened plastic case that `truly' protected the unit. The case, if you want to call it that, is simply TERRIBLE! Trust me on this. Go to an electronic or photo retailer with your unit and buy a small/compact bag suitable for video equipment. This OMRON is a very nice unit, but this stupid flimsy storage bag is an insult to the engineers who designed such a magnificent BP reader. This case is like storing your brand new BMW in a car cover made out of sewn-together kitchen trash bags.

CONCLUSION: As someone who hated my older OMRON units, this gizmo, HEM-790IT is truly something else. You'll love it!

1 out of 5 stars NOT ACCURATE   July 22, 2010
DaveM
I purchased this unit back in January and paid good money for it thinking Omron had a great piece of equipment that could help me monitor my blood pressure and record it on my PC. When I started to use it at the end of January I found my blood pressure to be high which worried me as it has been normal my whole life. I visited my doctor a couple of times up to now and he said it was normal. He suggested I bring in the unit when I have my physical which was yesterday. When he took a reading on his unit it was 130/70 and a pulse of 80 then it was taken on the Omron unit and read 159/98 and a pulse of 81. Only the pulse was accurate. I now have to pay shipping, insurance and an $8 check required by Omron to have this unit function properly. What a great warranty program - NOT!

5 out of 5 stars Can you handle the pressure?   July 16, 2010
Jimm (Columbus, OH)
Reduce your stress, know your stats. Your typical blood pressure monitor with the added feature to connect to your PC. Works great! The two people feature is great for helping you track your numbers. It would be nice to have a guest function as well, but if only two person needs to track their presure in detail, it fills the bill.
