I purchased this scale to keep track of the weight of my cat, who is a little overweight. Our vet recommended a baby scale. I ordered this Salter Model because it got quite a few good reviews.
However, if I could give this scale a rating of zero, I would. It just plain doesn't work. When my cat was at the vet last week, she weighed 12.2 pounds. I tried to weigh her several times on this scale, and she consistently weighed 5.6 pounds. And, she just curled up in the top cradle, so she was fully cooperating. It's just ridiculous that something this simple shouldn't work properly. I kept checking to make sure I had it on the "LB" setting, as I just kept thinking I was doing something wrong.
I did contact Amazon customer service, and they issued a pre-paid mailing label so that I wouldn't have to pay for return shipping. Thank you Amazon for such great customer service.
Accurate weight, but too small for tall babies! August 13, 2010 Melanie (Washington) I recieved this scale in the mail today, which worked out well since my son just had his 4 month check up this morning and was weighed at the Dr's so I have an accurate weight to compare it to. This morning at the Dr my son was 16lbs 10oz and on this scale this evening he was 16lbs 8oz so I feel it is really pretty accurate. However the scale does NOT come with batteries as stated on the amazon.com listing. I had to run out and buy batteries because i was so excited to try it. Also the baby bed needs to be longer. My son is only 4months old and his legs hang off completly so I worry in a few months his length and half half of his body hanging off the scale will make the weight inaccurate. So this scale might not be good for taller babies. My son is 26.75" long.
Very good value and sturdy. August 1, 2010 Michael (New York City) I purchased this to monitor one of my terminally ill cats. Not the cat that I added the image of above. My two complaints are that there was no 9V battery included as stated in the product description, and a big plus would be for the display and buttons to light up. Other than that, it is accurate, easy to attach and lock the stable cradle, and a great value at this price. Did I overlook a battery in the packaging anyone? I confirmed accuracy as I weighed him right before going to the vet who weighed him as well, and it matched.
Edit: On further use I was frustrated as my healthy cat was lounging again in the cradle and thought that would be a good time to weigh her. What could be more accurate and convenient than a cat *lounging* in the cradle when you want to weigh it? See pic in the image section to see her on it. Well, with her on it and turning it on you have to zero it first. if you do that with her on it she will weigh zero lbs or kg! What am I missing here? Guess i could take her off the scale and get a negative reading? I will read the booklet again and if it's not possible to weigh properly with the cat already on the scale I may have to remove a star even though this scale is primarily marketed for baby and toddler use. With cats you have to take advantage of opportunity. Not every cat is such a great patient so for cat use my rating would be three stars.
Hope to get some feedback on the battery situation and how to properly weigh with the cat already in the cradle.
Well built, easy to use, accurate July 30, 2010 D. Chappell (Stafford Springs, Connecticut, United States) Produces highly accurate and repeatable measurements. Is well made and sturdy, heavy enough to stay in place. Pan can be removed for washing. Can be switched from pounds and ounces to kilograms at the push of a button.
Has a hold button which will freeze the display, but it is not particularly useful because the scale turns itself off too quickly. By the time one has put the babe down and given him a toy, the reading will be lost.
